As before the war the sheep are brought back to their pens for the night –
But the fields in which they grazed are no more -
The Israeli tanks and soldiers have scarred the earth – leaving behind scenes that echo of a great war nearly a century ago –
And as the SMOKE STILL STAINS THE SKY some here are left with little faith in the UNITY TALKS BETWEEN PALESTINIANS across the Gaza border in Cairo –
ABED ELMHAED FARJALLA: I’M VERY PESSIMISTIC. EVEN IF HAMAS AND FATAH DO AGREE ON UNITY… ISRAEL WILL NEVER WANT PEACE.
EVEN IF THE LEADERS DO MAKE A DEAL IT WILL NOT ACHIEVE ANYTHING.
But others like Khalad Abuasey see the reconciliation talks as critical to repairing the ruin – The olive trees his father planted three decades ago were uprooted in a matter of minutes, and if there is no agreement he says the suffering he and other Palestinians have endured was for nothing –
KHALAD ABUASEY: LET ME GIVE A MESSAGE TO ALL THE LEADERS IN CAIRO-THERE MUST BE UNITY. THERE WERE NO DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FATAH AND HAMAS WHEN FACING ISRAEL. IF THERE IS NO UNITY NOW IT MEANS WE WILL BE THE LOSERS HERE. NOBODY WILL BE ABLE TO HELP US REBUILD OUR HOMES AND REPLANT OUR GARDENS AND OLIVES.
Sabh Farjalla returned home three days ago to discover the Israelis had left behind only charred bodies of her ten sheep and fifty chickens – her family of nine left with no livelihood.
The only animal she possesses left alive is the family cat.
SABH FARJALLA: IF GOD IS WILLING I WISH THEY WILL ACHIEVE SOMETHING IN CAIRO. AND THEN IT WILL DEPEND ON ALL THE LEADERS WHETHER THEY HAVE IT IN THEIR HEARTS TO HELP US.
A white dove is partially concealed by birds of different colour – perching next to a position occupied by Israeli snipers in recent days.
MIKE HANNA: JHOER EL DIKE: AMONGST THE RUNS THERE IS STILL THE STRONG HOPE THAT UNITY CAN BE ACHIEVED. BUT AMONG THOSE HERE AN UNANSWERED QUESTION.
REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAPPENS IN CAIRO IF THIS CAN BE DONE WITH IMPUNITY THEN WHAT IS TO STOP ISRAEL FROM DOING IT AGAIN.

The Abu Sheikh family built their shack entirely with material from the rubble of their demolished home.
The family spent the last week of the war in a United Nations school turned makeshift shelter.
But they were forced to vacate the school so that classes could resume.
Mukarram Abu Sheikh is in a state of shock.
She showed us her new home where she lives with her husband and 7 children.
MUKARRAM ABU SHEIKH
GAZA CITY
"We don’t have anyone from Hamas here, there are no leaders in the neighbourhood. These are the homes for simple people, many of them didn’t even have jobs. My husband used to work just to put bread on the table every day. We didn’t expect this. When I saw the destruction I almost became unconscious."
People are only beginning to process the full extent of what happened.
The UN estimates that the damage from Israel’s air, ground, and sea offensive to be close to 2 billion dollars…
…People’s properties and belongings, much of it damaged beyond recognition.
P2C - 6 people lived in the house that used to be here. This is all that remains of it. If you take a look you can see that there is a school backpack, this looks like a pair of ladies shoes, and this is a blanket. The war may be over, but it will take people a long time to rebuild their lives.
Everywhere you go in Gaza people will tell you that they were promised help…
… help that they are still waiting for.
MUKARRAM ABU SHEIKH
GAZA CITY
"We were told that we would get support, we would get houses. We are refugees and we were told that the UN and the government will help us. When they asked us to leave the school the UN and the Red Cross said they will give us another shelter… all promises, nothing happened on the ground."
Left to their own devices, the Abu Sheikhs and their neighbours say they have no choice but to get on with their lives.
Feature on students of Palestine and how they react and cope to the bombing, killings and atrocities of the war by Israel on innocent Palestinian civilians.

SHERINE TADROS GAZA – Palestine
An eerie silence as we drove through Gaza City at night. It’s Thursday evening, usually these streets would be bustling. Not tonight, the usual signs of life ..replaced by those of destruction.
We went to spend the night with Nader and Sherine Abu Seedo and their five children. They live in Gaza City, an ordinary family in an ordinary part of town living in extraordinary times.
SOT Nader Abu Seedo - father
“We’ve never seen days like this in all my time in Gaza. Of course there have been airstrikes before but never so continious, with this intensity”
As a father I want to protect my children. When there are strikes I talk to them, tell them it will be okey. They are so scared so I just sit close to them until it stops.
For the first time in 3 days there was electricity in the house…a chance for the family to see in full what’s happening all around them. The effects of the noises they hear all day and night.
While the rest of the world watches the images of this war in horror…for people here this is the reality of what awaits them beyond their front doors.
And although they refuse to give up..Israel’s blockade of goods and supplies is making even the simplest of tasks difficult..
SOT Sherine Abu Seedo - mother

Amidst the destruction of Israel’s war… a moment of peaceful prayer…
Where a mosque once stood tall, worshippers kneel before god surrounded by rubble…
This is what is left of the Nour al Mohammed mosque on the outskirts of Gaza City,
A house of God for Muslims…became a target for the Israeli military…
This Friday, two weeks into the Israeli assault, the faithful were undeterred …this weeks prayer had an added meaning.
VOX POPS x 2
“This prayer is obligatory for Us Mulims and if the Israelis want to deny it to us, we will despite the bombings, we will and worship god here” // God only strengthens our conviction after these attacks
During the war on the Gaza Strip, no inch has been spared; nearly 13 mosques have been destroyed by the Israeli military who allege the mosques been used as “terrorist havens”…
As worshippers flocked, the Mosque’s imam delivered his message to followers and to those following developments in Gaza….
IMAM SOT To the people around the world and in Arab and Muslim countries, I say your silence allows for this aggression to continue…
and to those praying here, I say, this is our mosque and will pray here till judgment day and we will rebuild this mosque even bigger…
Abu Mohammed usually doesn’t pray here, but when he fled his neighborhood a week ago and joined his daughter’s family nearby, he was moved by a sense of purpose to pray at the Mohammed mosque…

Heba does not want to be here. But like half the population of Gaza, venturing out to get UN food aid, she has little choice. Israel’s blockade has stopped food distribution for 2 weeks…now its war has forced Gazans to choose between going hungry or risking their lives to find something to eat.
We met Heba in the queue waiting to collect a food ration for her 15 brothers and sisters… we followed her home to the Shat’I refugee camp.
For the past 6 days the family have not left their house…which is within target range of Israel’s warships.
The 7 children who live here cant sleep at night…
MOREB SOT
“The sounds we hear are incredible. They are hitting us, normal people, with F16 planes! A person who does that is not a human being. Refugee camps are hit all the time, we are flesh and bone we cannot stand that. The walls, look at the walls, they shake like there's an earthquake, they cant stand that either.”
Heba showed me around her home…and explained what life has been like being trapped inside here for 6 days…
HEBA SOT
“We don’t have water, we cant wash anything, not even clean the fish we managed to get days ago. Look here.. this is shrapnel from an Israeli missile that fell nearby…it broke the window. The Israelis claim they are not harming civilians or their homes. That Hamas is bearing the brunt of this war. Well what does this look like to you?”
I asked her if she blames Hamas for what’s happening…
HEBA SOT
“No, from the day I was born I have seen missiles and attacks in Gaza- with or without Hamas Israel punishes us. It’s the same story over and over again whoever is in control here.”
All over Heba’s home is evidence of Israel’s continuing assault…. and the effects on those they insist are not their targets…
But there is evidence here too of resilience …a family sticking together through times of hunger and now through days of war…both imposed by Israel.
In the hour we spent with Heba we heard 4 rounds of Israeli warships firing onto Gaza…as we said good bye, the sounds of the fighter jets hovering above got louder and she said she had a bad feeling. Minutes after we left the Israeli military rang the home, warning the family to evacuate….the next round of fire was coming.

Rushed Transcript:
They fled the frontlines of this war... knowing that Israel's assault would follow them. In Gaza, nowhere is safe and nobody is immune from the onslaught.
There are hundreds of refugees now living in makehift centres like this school in Gaza City. Thirteen thousand have already been DRIVEN FROM THEIR HOMES, according to the UN.
Noha left her home on the outskirts of the Strip with her husband and three children. Her youngest, Marwa, hasen’t been changed in 3 days. The milk she is drinking is the last bottle Noha has for her…
SOT NOHA – REFUGEE I want to tell people outside to do something, why is Palestinian blood so cheap to you? Why are our neighbours living in peace but we are deprived of that? What have the children done to deserve this? Why should my daughter drink milk from a dirty bottle? She won’t even take it anymore. What did we do wrong? They bring us some milk, a blanket- we don’t want it! we want to go home and eat and sleep and live like everyone else. Where is the great Arab world that they taught us about at school? They have left us…shame on them.
Conditions here are deteriorating..creating a CLEAN, SAFE shelter in a warzone is no easy task.
PTC Sherine Tadros – Gaza City
“The school simply isn’t equipped to be able to handle the number of refugees staying here night after night. This is the only place they can get clean water, but you can see most of the taps aren’t working and people are using this sink to wash their hands, their faces, their feet…and they're also using it to drink from because it’s the only clean water in the whole school”
We could feel the anger all around the shelter.... disappointment at the inaction of the international community….and rage at the Arab leaders who they feel have sold them out.
SOT Sobhi Rizk - Refugee
Where are the authorities, where are our leaders..they have shut their eyes. Why is it that children around the world are allowed to live in peace but not Palestine’s children? Aren’t we all the same, the children of God. We just want to be free to live in peace.
61 members of Sobhi Rizk’s family are now living in this shelter….his granddaughter amal was overwhelmed by what was happening around her..
SOT Amal Rizk - Refugee
I am crying for the children of Gaza that have been thrown in the streets. We have nothing to do with this. We don’t fire rockets, we don’t know what this war is about. Why should children be forced to drink dirty water, what did we do wrong? where is everyone?!
Refugees are a casualty of every war. But in Gaza, there is nowhere safe to flee. Israel says its enemy is Hamas, but while it fights its battle it keeps a million and a half people trapped inside the warzone its created.
